Virtual Club Meeting with Academic Manager Chiara Benetollo of the Petey Greene Program

April 13 @ 19:00 - 20:00

Chiara Benetollo

Chiara Benetollo is a literary scholar with a passion for expanding access to high-quality education. She is the Academic Manager of the Petey Greene Program (PGP), the largest multi-state provider of academic support and tutoring services for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people in the U.S. In this capacity, Chiara has developed and manages a college bridge program that prepares incarcerated students to access and succeed in college. Prior to joining the PGP, she taught inside New Jersey prisons and worked at the Prison Teaching Initiative at Princeton University, where she piloted the organization’s first set of BA-level courses, offered to incarcerated students across New Jersey through a partnership with Princeton and Rutgers Universities. Chiara holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University and teaches Italian and Russian literature as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Bryn Mawr College.

With over 2 million incarcerated people, the U.S. has the largest prison population and the highest incarceration rate in the world. Only 20% of formerly incarcerated people have a high school diploma. Even when they have a high school credential, currently and formerly incarcerated students often lack the crucial literacy and numeracy skills that are necessary to succeed in postsecondary education and the workforce. Chiara will discuss the work of the Petey Greene Program, founded in 2008, an organization that brings high-quality education to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated learners in New York and across the northeastern U.S.A. She will focus on the organization’s programs in New York City and on the initiative that she leads, a college bridge program that fosters students’ confidence alongside their writing and reading skills, preparing them to enroll and succeed in higher education programs.
